I set up Hidden Moon Boutique in June 2020, after struggling to find a Flower Girl Dress for my little girl for my wedding. I wanted to be able to go into a shop and for her to have a really nice experience, try on loads of different dresses, and feel like a princess.
Ultimately, I wanted to be able to touch, feel and see exactly what I was buying. You can order online, but when it arrives it’ll likely be completely different to what you were expecting. Also, of course, no child is the same size – you can’t pick a dress like this off the peg – so that’s where my idea of offering made-to-measure came in. I wanted to provide an amazing experience for children to feel comfortable confident and safe to try on dresses and for parents to be able to have overall control in the process knowing the quality and fit would allow their children to feel and look like a princess
After getting nowhere with finding my daughters perfect dress, I decided to take matters into to my own hands. I found a UK-based designer, whose made-to-order offering enabled me to choose the perfect dress, and it snowballed from there.
After we’d got married, my Mum came to me and said that there must be other people out there who struggle to find a personalised flower girl dress – both in terms of style and fit – and I wonder if you can help other mothers and daughters who were in your position before the wedding.
As a mother, I know that the common path is to find outfits, spend a fortune on them, wear it once, and then and they don’t really want to wear it to another wedding, because everyone asks “who did you wear that to such and such’s wedding?”.
From this moment, we now offer, Mother of the Bride, Prom, Bridesmaid, and Occasion-wear dresses – such as for cruises, dinner dances, balls and black tie. We’re able to uniquely alter the length, style and colour of dresses for customers – the world is your oyster really, in ways ordering online isn’t.
When it comes to the dress agency, I’m also quite environmentally conscious, because we’re re-using and re-purposing dresses that were presumed no longer required. So instead of sending them landfill or leaving them sat in a wardrobe, why not make some money back on them? And on the rare occasion a dress doesn’t sell, we’ll donate it to a charity.
Many of our customers will pop in for afternoon tea on a walk, or just be walking past and the shop window grabs their eye – we also see people travelling in from afar, because I think mothers are really seeing the value in a personalised experience for their daughters and having a dress that they like and fits them perfectly.
